Balloon in Tuscany: the launch areas, and what is under each one

The Chianti hills, between Florence and Siena. The southern ridges, around Pienza and Montalcino. The most distinctive ground in the niche and the least like the postcard: long bare hills, single farmhouses on the crests, roads that climb in curves between them. $401 launches near Montalcino and comes with champagne and breakfast; it holds 5.0 from 36 reviews, the strongest rating on this site that has proof behind it.

The Lucca side. One listing, $343: an hour over the rolling hills and vineyards from Lucca at around 2,000 feet, 4.9 from 53 reviews. The ground here is flatter close in, with the hills standing on the horizon, so the flight reads as a wide view rather than a set of folds.

And one listing that lets you pick. $492 is the only four-hour morning in the niche and offers a choice of launch areas on the Chianti and Siena side, with a light breakfast after the landing. It is new this season and carries no reviews yet.

A balloon has no steering. It goes where the wind at that altitude is going, the pilot works with height rather than direction, and the landing happens in whichever field is suitable when the hour is up. A chase vehicle follows from the ground and collects everyone. No operator here publishes a route or a landing spot, because none of them has one to publish.

So the launch area is the whole of the choice. Booking a balloon in Tuscany on the southern side means the first light falls on bare ridges; booking the Chianti side means it falls on vineyard rows. What you drift across after that is whatever the wind offers, and it is different every morning from the same field.
